It can also be used to preserve the bright colours of vegetables and fruit. For example, if you peel an avocado that you want to store for a longer time without letting it turn brown, sprinkle it with water containing citric acid powder — it will stay beautifully green for a long time.

A natural household cleaner and descaler

At home, citric acid works well as a descaler and cleaning agent. It helps remove limescale and grease from various surfaces. In cosmetics, you’ll appreciate its brightening properties — it is ideal for creams, hair rinses and nail whiteners.

A tip from ietsGezond.nl: citric acid powder makes it easy to descale a kettle and remove dirt from the grout between tiles. Pour a cup of citric acid powder into a full kettle and boil the water. The powder will dissolve in the water, which you can then pour away. If you have a problem with dirty grout, add about 5 tablespoons of lukewarm water to half a cup of citric acid powder. Stir with a spoon to make a slightly thick paste. Then apply it to the dirty grout and leave it for about 5 minutes. After rinsing, the grout will look like new!

Precautions when using citric acid powder

Citric acid (E330) is considered a safe compound. However, since it is an acid, basic precautions should be taken. It is particularly important to protect your eyes. Remember not to mix citric acid powder with chlorine-containing cleaning products. This is very dangerous, because citric acid powder will cause chlorine to be released quickly, resulting in a sudden build-up of corrosive chlorine fumes.
