Some properties and additional uses of baking soda

Baking soda is suitable for making homemade, environmentally friendly cleaning products and helps keep your home clean without unnecessary toxic chemicals. Sodium bicarbonate has a leavening effect and can therefore be added to baked goods instead of traditional baking powder, making cakes, cookies, and pancakes light and fluffy. Baking soda is alkaline and absorbs unpleasant odors.

Sodium bicarbonate for your throat and fresh breath: baking soda is alkaline and therefore creates an environment that is unsuitable for bacteria. By dissolving a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water, you can make a solution that is ideal for rinsing your mouth and throat. This freshens your breath and limits the growth of bacteria in those areas. This solution is also suitable for people with dentures.

Baking soda as a laundry aid: it is often used to boost the effectiveness of detergent, achieve better whitening results, and remove stains from clothes more effectively. You can add a teaspoon of baking soda to your laundry detergent to boost its effectiveness.

Sodium bicarbonate for the litter box: many people add baking soda to the cat litter in the litter box. This makes it more absorbent and also neutralizes unwanted odors.

Baking soda against insects: you can combat these unwanted guests by sprinkling baking soda in various places around your home. Sprinkle it under your mattress, around your bed, and along the baseboards to deter insects. To boost its effectiveness, you can also add a few drops of lavender oil to the baking soda or mix it with diatomaceous earth.

Tip from ietsGezond.nl: if you have green growth on your driveway, for example on the paving or concrete, baking soda is ideal for removing it. It also creates conditions that are unfavorable for weeds. We use two methods to remove green growth from our driveway. If you don't mind a visible white powder, simply sprinkle baking soda over the paving. When it rains, the rain washes away the baking soda and the green growth. If you would rather not sprinkle powder around your home, you can dissolve the sodium bicarbonate in water first. This does take more time — baking soda dissolves best in hot water. Use about half a kilo of baking soda per 4 liters of water. Then spray the solution onto the areas with green growth. The growth will be gone after the first rainfall.
