A woody plant with slow growth and an interesting, round trunk with a swelling at the base resembling an elephant’s leg. Narrow, strap-like leaves grow in a rosette from the top of the trunk. Seeds can be sown year-round, though spring is best. Before sowing, the seeds should be scarified (rubbed with sandpaper), then soaked for 2–3 hours in warm water. Sow to a depth of 0.5 cm in a bright place at 25°C.
