What is ground cinnamon and where does it come from?

Cinnamon is considered one of the most popular and longest used spices. The ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Indians and Chinese were delighted with the taste. In addition to its undisputed taste qualities, they also valued cinnamon for its healthful properties.

This spice is readily available in almost every corner of the world, yet it actually comes from Sri Lanka (named Ceylon). Meanwhile, the plant from which it is obtained is also found in countries such as India, China, Thailand, Mauritius, Madagascar and even in some regions of South America. Cinnamon is obtained from the bark of the cinnamon tree. An evergreen tree that belongs to the laurel family. We can distinguish many of its species in the world. The most popular are Chinese cinnamon, Ceylon and camphor.  Most countries mainly use ground cinnamon bark. Interestingly, it becomes bitter due to a long cooking time. Therefore, cinnamon is added just before the meal is ready.

In the modern pharmaceutical industry, Ceylon cinnamon bark and the oil obtained from it are widely used. An interesting fact is that in ancient times cinnamon was used as a healing agent not only in the context of the body, but also in the soul. She believed that he was able to ward off evil spirits. In addition, the ancient Egyptians used this herb in the embalming process. Ground cinnamon is brown in color and has a strong aroma.
