An annual plant with a distinctive aroma. Height 30–40 cm. Flowers from July to August. Sow seeds directly into the ground at the end of April, at a depth of 1 cm. The sweet, aromatic seeds are used as a spice in the alcohol industry and as an addition to cakes.

Fruits with a rind that turns whitish as they ripen, light-yellow flesh, very juicy, weight 2–3 kg. They contain sugars, vitamins and mineral salts. Sow in April in a cold frame or after May 15 directly into the ground, 2–3 seeds in one spot. After emergence, thin out leaving one plant. Harvest from mid-July to October. An excellent addition to lecsó.
